My main defense mechanism is to try to be funny. I feel that if I can make someone laugh, they will automatically like me. It’s just what I do. I am quite quiet around people that I don’t know.

Nervous.

I am a nervous person. Sometimes I can hide it extremely well, but the feeling is always there. Here are some of the examples of what I see myself doing in everyday life.

I cannot maintain eye-contact. If we are ever having a conversation and I look away in the first ten seconds, don’t be offended. This is natural for me. Even while I am talking to a customer at work, I cannot maintain it for longer than maybe thirty seconds.

I get really nervous during arguments and fights. Even if I am not involved in the altercation at all, I want to disappear. And if I am involved in the argument, you will probably get nothing but head nods and “I’m sorry” from me.

Sometimes I get uncomfortable watching movies. If there is a scene where a character is doing something to make them a little nervous, I also will become nervous. It seems like the stupidest thing, but I have to just look away during some movies.

I guess the point is that I hate this about myself. My calling as a Christian is to spread the love of Christ to unbelievers, but if I don’t have the courage to speak to them, how can I effectively convey the message?

This has been on my mind recently, and I wish that I could change this about myself, and “man-up,” so-to-speak. If any of you psychology majors out there can tell me what this means and what I can do to fix it, please enlighten me.

So it’s funny to me how Christians use the Christian f-word so abundantly. We all do it. Freakin. That’s it. Christians say freakin more than Adam Sandler drops the real f-bomb. Just saying. Have you ever noticed that too?

Rad.

It is a word that I use in excess of 100x per week. Seriously.

I like the word, but I feel that my use of it has gotten out of hand.

I noticed my friend Kyle saying it, and I thought “Man! Rad is a sweet word. I should start saying it!”

I did start saying it, and look where I am today.

People who never use the word have been using it in emails and texts to me.

I just thought that I would share my three month history of rad.

Awaken

So this past Saturday I went to hear my good friend Jake speak at the Awaken 2009 conference at NorthStar Church in Kennesaw. It was a great time, with Chris Huff leading worship. I saw a lot of old friends, and made some new ones!!

Here are my notes and quotes from Jake’s talk:

(keep in mind these are the shorthand that I wrote during his speech, but I think they make sense)

-”They were the cool Christian kids who didn’t dump over porta-potties.” – Jake Dudley

-More women go to church than men.

-Jesus was living, breathing, walking Love.

-As long as Jesus is being preached, it doesn’t matter what color carpet the church has, what type of pre-service music, etc…

-People talk about Jesus 2000 years later

-God sent Jesus down to Earth, and to die for the sins of men and women

-What if I, through everyone’s junk, life, etc…, just loved them the way Jesus does?

-The World says that for any problem, there is a program, pill, or person to solve it. That is crap. Jesus is the answer.

Dear God,
I know you have a plan for my life, but does Lowe’s really have to be part of it? That place sucks the happiness out of me, and I am in a terrible mood when I’m there. Isn’t there something else I could be doing?

Adam,
You are fortunate enough to have a job my son. You are fortunate enough to have a truck that your job pays for. You are fortunate enough to have the money to pay your bills, and it comes from your job. That job is your income source, and you are fortunate enough to have what you need and more. You are blessed with this. Be grateful, not bitter.
